Buying a Grave and choosing the location

New grave plots are available to Prepurchase

We can help you choose a cemetery or grave by advising on the types and availability of graves, and any conditions that apply to them, such as their suitability for memorials, alternativly the Funeral Director you choose (if required)  will also be able to aswer any questions you may have .   Please see the price list attached to this page .

Exclusive rights of burial

When buying a grave, the Exclusive Rights of Burial are being purchased, on a leasehold basis for an initial period of 100 years.  If the owner dies, they have an automatic right to be buried in the grave (as long as there is space to do so).

Permission must be given by the owner for any burials in, or memorials placed on, the grave. If there is no living owner, the authority will need to establish who is legally entitled to the grave, and the “transfer of ownership” must be completed before a burial can go ahead.

Scattering of Ashes

The scattering of ashes is permitted in designated areas of the cemeteries.  In all instances, prior permission must be sought from the council. An Adminitratiion charge will apply.

Memorial Stones

You will need to order your memorial from a monumental mason, as there are regulations governing their construction; there are also limits on the size and type of memorials allowed in the cemetery. The mason will be able to explain these to you.

Parish Council or Church Cemeteries

There are also cemeteries owned by town and parish councils in the district.  Queries relating to other cemeteries and burial grounds in North West Leicestershire should be referred to the appropriate Parish Council or church.

Tell us Once

Tell Us Once is a free service offered by HM Government

When someone has died, there are a lot of things that need to be done, at a time when you probably least feel like doing them.

Tell Us Once is voluntary to use and very helpful. It enables you to report a death only once, telling central and local government services securely and confidentially without you having to inform them individually.

After you have registered the death with the Registrar, they will provide you with a unique Tell Us Once reference number, which will enable you to access the service online via Gov UK

If you have been issued with a Coroners Fact of Death (Interim Death Certificate) you may still be able to use the service and the Registrar willadvise you how to do so.
