How to register to vote

Your vote matters logo

  • You can now register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
  • Everyone is responsible for registering themselves.  Under the old system the 'head of every household' could register everyone who lived at their address
  • You need to provide a few more details to register - including your National Insurance number and date of birth.  This makes the electoral register more secure

How do I register under the new system?

  1. Go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
  2. Fill in your name, address, date of birth and a few other details.  You'll also need your National Insurance number, which can be found on your national insurance card, or in official paperwork such as payslips, pension slips, or letters about benefits or tax credits
  3. Look our for a confirmation to say you're registered

Keeping the register up to date

We are requried to conduct an annual canvass of all households in North West Leicestershire each year to ensure that the Register of Electors is kept up to date.

The way the annual canvass is done this year has recently been reformed. Please read the paperwork that you recieve and contact us if you have any questions.

What contact will I receive?

Your household may be contacted in different ways such as by post, e-mail or telephone.

If the contact made does not require a response but I have changes to make?

In some circumstances you will not need to respond.  You will be sent the information on who is registered to vote in your household.  If you need to update any information this can be done using the Household Response Service and entering the Part 1 and Part 2 security codes provided on the letter sent to your household.

How do I reply where a response is required?

If we have sent you a form/letter that does need a response this can easily be done online using the Household Response Service and entering the Part 1 and Part 2 security codes provided on the form/letter sent to your household.  This is the quickest and easiest way to make any changes.

If the information is correct and no changes are required you can also do this using the automated telephone reponse service on 0800 197 9871 and then entering your Part 1 and Part 2 security codes.  Alternatively the completed form can be returned in the pre-paid envelope provided.

If you would like any further information please contact 01530 454512 between the hours of 9.30 am and 4.00 pm Monday to Friday or e-mail electreg@nwleicestershire.gov.uk
