Date of Release: Mon 30th January, 2012
North West Leicestershire District Council has recently completed the landmark fitting of the 1000th new door as part of its investment programme to improve council tenants’ homes.
To celebrate the milestone Councillor Roger Bayliss, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and Customer Services, presented a bouquet of flowers to council tenant Mrs Doreen Moore, who lives in the property in Hugglescote where the 1,000th door was fitted.
The door replacement programme is just one part of the of the Council’s Housing Planned Improvement Programme, which started in April 2009 following consultation with tenants about their priorities for improvements.
Councillor Bayliss said: “Improving the quality of tenants’ homes to meet the Decent Homes Standard by 2015 is a key priority for the Council, and I’m delighted to mark this major milestone in delivering these improvements.”
Mrs Moore said: “The new door has really given me piece of mind with the extra security and added warmth.”
Councillor Bayliss added: “It’s really exciting to see first hand the difference that these improvements make to peoples lives, and I am looking forward to being able to share many more improvement milestones with tenants over the next three years”.
Following the award of £20.75 million in Government grant funding, North West Leicestershire District Council will soon be starting work on the Decent Homes Improvement Programme, which will run from 2012 to 2015. As part of this work a further 1,760 tenants homes will benefit from new doors, with other improvements including new kitchens, bathrooms, roofs, rewiring, windows, boilers and central heating systems also planned.
The Council are in the final stages of planning the details of this new improvement programme, which will see work completed to over 3,700 tenants’ homes in the next three years.
