Pupils at St Charles Show Respect by Celebrating ‘Planet Measham’

Date of Release: Tue 7th February, 2012

Pupils at St Charles Catholic Primary School in Measham are spending a day this week celebrating the different cultures within their school.

The workshop, called ‘Planet Measham’ has been funded by the Safer North West Leicestershire Partnership’s Respect Challenge and will involve Polish, Philippine and Indian volunteers from the local community.

The students will learn how the volunteers came to live in Measham and will take part in a range of activities to teach them about the different cultures in their local community.

In the afternoon pupils will sample typical foods from these cultures and take part in a dance workshop.

Head teacher Mrs Frances Smith said: “The day is a wonderful opportunity for the children to understand the variety of cultures that exist in our school and it will teach them to value and take pride in the differences that exist.”

Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Chairman of the Safer North West Leicestershire Partnership, said: “I am delighted that St Charles Catholic Primary School has taken a positive step in bringing the local community together and teaching them to respect each other’s differences.

“This is a fun experience which the children will remember for a long time and the whole community will benefit from it.”

Some of the pupils at the school have been invited to a Respect awards ceremony next month at Conkers to celebrate their achievements.

The ‘Respect Challenge’ is organised and funded by the Safer North West Leicestershire Partnership. It supports community initiatives that encourage young people to take an active and positive role in society, promote respect and build bridges between different generations and community groups.

The annual Respect award ceremony is planned at Conkers Discover Centre, Moira on Thursday 15th March at 6pm to celebrate the achievements of 10 local projects supported over the past 12 months.
