Families can make a splash at one of the UK’s last remaining open air pools when it re-opens on the next Bank Holiday weekend.
The popular open-air pool at Hood Park Leisure Centre in Ashby will officially open on Saturday 27 May, with admission on the opening day just £1.
Over the Bank Holiday weekend the pool will open at 9am with rafts and floats in the pool from 11am and the poolside barbecue being lit at midday.
If the sun’s shining swimmers are encouraged to bring sun tan cream as the patio areas around the pool are a great sun trap.
Following the opening, the pool is open for daily public swimming sessions every day during school holidays and at the weekends during term time (weather permitting).
The pool, which is also a popular venue for parties and celebrations, is available for private hire in the evenings from June to September, with barbeques and inflatables added.
Parties are available most nights of the week throughout the season. Prices start from £160, including lifeguards, and you can add BBQ’s and the inflatable to that at an additional price.
Following requests from swimmers, the leisure centre will also be trialing an early morning lane swim in the outdoor pool on certain dates. These will take place between 8am and 10am on Tuesday 6, 13 and 20, and Friday 9, 16 and 23 June. Lane swimming is only available for swimmers aged 16 and over.
Rob Bartholomew, Hood Park Leisure Centre Manager, said: “There are very few outdoor pools still open in the UK so ours offers a rare and exciting opportunity for families.
“We think there are few things better than spending a summer’s day in and around a swimming pool, with the poolside barbecue fired up.
“On the opening day it will cost just £1 to join the fun, so pack up your swim costume, sun screen and towel, and enjoy our fantastic pool.”
