Free stalls at Coalville Market are being offered to potential business people as part of the Love Your Local Market fortnight.
The national celebration of all things markets between Wednesday 17-31 May and encourages entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity of becoming a trader.
It also appeals for members of the public to consider using their local market more often, supporting the traders and shopping local.
North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) is offering people with business ideas a free trial on Saturday 20 and Saturday 27 May, where they can set up a stall and sell to customers without paying any fees.
The Love Your Local Market campaign celebrates the uniqueness of markets, not just in May but year-round, and market operators, traders and members of the public are all encouraged to get involved.
John Richardson, Head of Community Services at NWLDC, said: “It can be a bit daunting if you are considering starting up a business, so we wanted to give people the chance to give it a go for free.
“It is a great opportunity to meet the other traders and some of the many customers that shop in the market.
“New traders are always welcome in the market and we hope the trial days might encourage some new faces to join us on a longer term basis.
“It’d be great to see more shoppers visiting us too during Love Your Market fortnight. If you don’t normally head to the market, give it a try – you might be surprised by what you find.”
Joe Millard, 19, set up his record stall when he was just 17 years old, and has seen his business expand to selling CDs and comic books.
He said: “I’ve really enjoyed working in the market and I’ve had a lot of support – I think because it was so unusual for a teenager to set up a stall.
“It requires hard work but if you are committed to it then it is a great thing to do.
“Do your research before you set up a stall, but do not be afraid to give it a go. The market always needs fresh faces and new ideas from traders selling something a bit different.”
Another market trader, Malcolm Greenhill, said: “I’ve been selling mobility scooters at the market now for around two-and-a-half years, and I never thought it would be as successful as it has been.
“There’s a steady trade that comes through the market and there’s certainly good profit to be made – especially if you can find a niche in the market.
“When people buy from a market they get better prices and friendly advice from the traders – it is a much better experience than going to your big chain stores.”
Coalville Market opens on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
