Information on cluster flies

Cluster flies are Commonly found throughout Europe and the UK. And as the name surrgests they cluster together in numbers in buildings usually the loft.

Biology

The female will deposit her eggs loosely on and around damp soil she will also lay them beneath dead and rotting leaves.

After approximately one week the larvae hatch from the eggs and search for earthworms to which they cling and then bore through the body wall of the worms.

The normally shaped fly maggots grow inside the earthworm, and at or near to death of the earthworm the larvae bores its way out again and pupate in the soil. As this is a field insect its life cycle is very dependent on weather conditions.

The adult fly feeds on the nectar of garden and wild flowers. And as the seasons change and the weather turns cooler they search for shelter in nooks and crannies in houses and other buildings. As temperatures drop further they seek out better protection and often form cluster masses, hence the name, in roof spaces and lofts.

Control

Once the flies are inside lofts or roof space, control is relatively simple both with physical methods and a range of insecticides you can also use a vacuum cleaner to great effect, having once collected the flies up the sealed bag can be disposed of. Alternatively, or in addition, most household fly killing sprays will quickly kill exposed flies.
