Applying for Housing (Housing Register)

Applying for a Council or Housing Association Home

North West Leicestershire District Council uses a Choice Based Lettings scheme to allocate council housing and most housing association properties. The Council is committed to giving all home seekers an equal opportunity to obtain quality housing. All the seven district councils of Leicestershire combine to offer this service.  Priority for homes in North West Leicestershire will still be given to home seekers who live in or have a connection to the district.  The map below shows the councils that are participating in the  Leicestershire Sub-Regional Choice Based Lettings scheme.

Unfortunately, many more people qualify for housing than can be re-housed each year and due to the limited supply of affordable housing many home seekers will not find a home immediately.

In most cases, home seekers must be over 18 years to hold a tenancy. However home seekers of 16 and 17 years of age can apply to go onto the housing register but must over be 18 to hold a tenancy or have a guarantor (a person over the age of 18 who will guarantee the rent will be paid and the terms of the tenancy agreed to).

If you are an existing social housing tenant (Council or Housing Association) living within any of the Leicestershire District or Borough council areas (excluding Leicester City) and want to move to another social housing tenancy within Leicestershire you can register for a transfer. However, you will not normally be offered an alternative property unless you have a clear rent account and your current property is in good condition, taking into account any difficult personal circumstances.

If you wish to transfer and your current tenancy is an introductory or probationary one and you are successful getting a new property, you will complete your probationary period at the new address. However, introductory or probationary tenants seeking a transfer who have had a Notice of Potential Proceedings issued may be moved to the low housing need band or have their application temporarily suspended.
