Introduction of Mandatory Fitting of Taxi Meters

At its meeting on 23rd November 2011 the Licensing Committee agreed that it would be mandatory for all the District's taxis to be fitted with a taxi meter (this does not apply to private hire vehicles).

The implementation scheme begins on 1st December 2011 when applications for new hackney carriage licences will only be granted once a meter has been fitted.

On this date it will be a requirement that meters will be used in accordance with the hackney carriage bye laws (see the vehicle licensing web pages for a copy of the bye laws).

From 31st January 2012 the renewal of a hackney carriage licence will only take place if a meter is fitted. No meter - no renewal. The whole process will be fully implemented by January 2013.

The 'Hackney Carriage - Specification and Conditions of Licence' document will be updated to include the meter amendments.
