Exemption from Displaying Council Plate for Private Hire Vehicles

Private hire drivers/operators may wish to consider whether displaying the Council's private hire vehicle plates portrays the right image to their corporate customers.

The Council does have an option to waive the necessity to display private hire vehicle plates and also the private hire driver's badges. This comes from Section 75(3) of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

To request a waiver please write to Stephen Eyre, Licensing Team Leader, setting out your reasons and supplying evidence. You may wish to supply photos of your vehicle and/or photocopies of any corporate contracts. Each request will be dealt with on case by case basis and the grant of a waiver is not guaranteed. However, the Council is keen to support its licensed drivers/operators in their attempts to secure corporate business.
