Right to Buy
Purchasing your council home
If you have been a tenant for at least five years, you will usually have the right to buy the home in which you live. However, there are some properties that are exempt from Right to Buy, such as elderly persons' developments.
You will also qualify for a discount of the open market value of the property, the size of the discount depending upon the length of tenancy and whether you are buying a house or a flat. You may buy jointly with other members of your family who live with you.
When a Right to Buy application is submitted, no further repair works would be carried out to your home other than emergency repairs. Full information is included with our Right to Buy pack.
A booklet, Your Right to Buy Your Home, giving details of the scheme is available on request together with an application form from the District Council or go to www.communities.gov.uk for more information.
