Street Cleansing - How We Do It

Street Management - Operations

How we do it?

To carry out the Cleansing Duty we have an operational team that consists of 13 employees and 10 vehicles of various descriptions.

  • Our work is roughly made up of;
  • 75% scheduled work
  • 25% non-scheduled (proactive / reactive) works

Scheduled Work

This is routine work carried out in a cyclical schedule. This is repetitive work carried out all year round to appropriate frequencies. These frequencies are determined by local needs and can change accordingly. For example, the litter problem associated when Stephenson College moved from Bridge Road to Thornborough Road. Schedules also change when new housing developments are built and roads become adopted. This work includes;

  • Emptying litter bins
  • Litter picking urban areas with persistant litter problems
  • Litter piccking the grass verges on large roads such as the A511 and A42
  • Road & footway sweeping in town and village centres
  • Road sweeping of main approach roads and roundabouts
  • Road sweeping in residential areas
  • Road sweeping on rural roads

Non-Scheduled Work

Non-scheduled work is in response to unplanned or unforeseen problems arising. This work includes;

  • Removal of flytips
  • Clearance of unexpected litter accumulation
  • Remedial works to bring an area back to an acceptable standard
  • Removal of roadkill
  • Removal of offensive graffiti on council property
  • Litter bin maintenance / reports of vandalism
  • Clearance of smashed glass
  • Removal of discarded syringes from a public area.

The street cleansing team tries to be as proactive as possible. We would sooner take control of a situation by seizing the initiative and dealing with a problem before it is reported to us. For this reason, all staff, including those doing scheduled work will deal with smaller incidents as they may notice them.
