In September 2022 North West Leicestershire District Council joined people and organisations across the country in a period of mourning following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Flags were lowered to half mast and members of the public were invited to sign books of condolence and lay floral tributes to the Queen in locations across the district.

As a mark of respect, Stenson House and the Memorial Clock Tower in Coalville were lit up in purple throughout the mourning period.

The books of condolence will now be collated along with others from across Leicestershire and held in the Records Office as a permanent record of the people’s response to the Queen’s death.

Floral tributes remained in place until after the state funeral, when they were gathered for composting in line with Buckingham Palace protocols.

Proclamation of King Charles III

The national proclamation of our new sovereign was held at St James' Palace in London at 11am on Saturday 10 September 2022. This was followed on Sunday 11 September 2022 by proclamations in the regions.

NWLDC Chairman, Councillor Russell Boam, led North West Leicestershire's proclamation of a new sovereign.

This short ceremony was held at the official flagpole to the front of Stenson House in Coalville with representatives from the local branch of the Royal British Legion and members of the public in attendance.

As part of the formal protocols, flags on vertical flag poles were raised to full height during the period of proclamation in recognition of the new monarch. They were then lowered again until the day after the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
