New streets and buildings need to be named and numbered in a logical and standardised way.

Applying for new street names and/or new property numbers

We encourage developers to suggest street names - read the guidance notes for more.

Please complete the application form and return to us - along with a site location plan and street layout clearly identifying the plots.

Renaming houses with no postal numbers

Does your property have a name instead of a postal number?

If you want to change the name complete the application form so the Local Land and Property Gazetteer can be amended. 

This will also make sure that properties in the same area don't have the same name, to avoid confusion for the emergency services and the Post Office.

Naming houses with postal numbers

Use this form if you want give your house a name as part of your official address. 

The Leicestershire Act (1985) says you must maintain a visible number from the street, even if you have also named your property. You can use the name in postal communication but you must also use the number. Your property will always be identified by the number.

You do not need approval to informally give your property a name - but it will not be included as part of the official address for the emergency services and Post Office unless you apply.

Renaming of houses or businesses

If you wish to rename your property, complete this application form and return it to us.

Also complete this form if you have received planning permission for a change of use of a business - or just wish to change the name of an existing business.

Fees

We charge a small fee for street naming and numbering:

  • Renaming or numbering an existing property: £42.25
  • Naming and numbering a development of up to five plots: £42.25 per plot
  • Naming and numbering a development of more than five plots (initial fee): £211.25 
  • Naming and numbering more than five plots (per plot): £22.25
  • Naming a street: £158
  • Change to a development after notification (initial fee): £55.50
  • Change to a development after notification (per plot): £28.25
  • Street renaming at residents request: £276.50
  • Confirmation of postal address details: £28.25
  • Numbering of a new flat complex (per flat): £28.25

Allocation of new postal addresses and new streets

Once a new postal address or street name has been allocated, we will contact Royal Mail.

Royal Mail will not allocate a postcode until it has received formal notification from us of a new street name or address. 

When we receive the new postcode, we will then inform the developer or occupier as appropriate. We will also inform other interested parties of the new address or street name. These include the emergency services, council departments and other organisations.

Land Registry

It is the responsibility of the property owner to inform Land Registry of a house/property name change approval - so your title deeds reflect the name of the property. The contact address is:
