Mobile CCTV to combat environmental crime

A state of the art CCTV van is now in action as North West Leicestershire District Council aims to reduce environmental Bott 2017crime across the district.

The council decided to upgrade its CCTV van, in partnership with Bott Ltd in Ashby de la Zouch, in an attempt to crack down on crimes such as littering, fly tipping and dog fouling.

The van, sponsored by Bott, has been fitted both inside and out to a high specification using their team of expert designers and fitters. The upgrades consisted of:

  • The installation of four new cameras giving 360 degree coverage
  • A monitoring station so the person inside can see and record everything with ease
  • Racking to hold equipment for community litter picking, anti dog fouling packs etc.

The van will provide a record of events as they happen and will act as a deterrent to would-be offenders. Footage gathered from its cameras will provide irrefutable evidence of criminal or unacceptable activity and help convict those who offend.

Bott 2017 2Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “The use of the van cameras has the potential to significantly improve the quality of evidence provided by officers in the drive to reduce environmental crime and anti-social behaviour. We continually receive complaints from the public regarding these issues and we think this van will go a way to helping to combat this type of behaviour.

“Even though crimes like littering, dog fouling and fly tipping may seem small they have a detrimental impact on not just the environment but people’s perception of where they live or work and we want people to be proud of living or working in this district.”

Kevin Woodward, Managing Director, Vehicle Enhancement Division at Bott, said: “We were delighted to work closely with North West Leicestershire District Council to develop this vehicle. Our design team spent time with the users of the vehicle and developed a solution which was cost effective and satisfied the requirements of the council. The van was then converted by our specialist vehicle team at Ashby de la Zouch.

"As a business which employs over 260 people in the North West Leicestershire area Bott has close links with the local community and we take pride in our region. Therefore, we were very pleased to be able to support the council by developing a surveillance van which can make a real difference in looking after and protecting our community and region.”
