Council goes contactless to make car parks more convenient

It will soon be easier than ever before to use town centre car parks in North West Leicestershire thanks to new upgraded machines.

North West Leicestershire District Council will be installing new state-of-the-art payment points at council car parks in Ashby and Coalville from Tuesday 8 August.

This will see motorists able to pay for parking by credit or debit card – including contactless payments – bringing an end to the scramble to find loose change after parking.

The new machines will have no impact on the cost of parking in council car parks, with prices remaining frozen until 2020.

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “We gained a lot of feedback from the car parking consultation we held last year, and making payment easier was something that was brought to our attention.

“These new machines will make things simpler for everyone, and brings us into the modern contactless era.

“We firmly believe that this will also encourage more people to visit both Ashby and Coalville, therefore supporting our local businesses.”

Car parking machines in Coalville will also now offer drivers the chance to buy monthly or weekly parking tickets. Quarterly, six-monthly and annual season tickets remain available through the council’s website.

The changes form part of the council’s car parking strategy which also saw parking in Coalville become ‘Free After Three’ in January of this year.
