Police in North West Leicestershire together with North West Leicestershire District Council launch their Celebrate Safely campaign in the run up to the festive season.
On Tuesday 14 November the #celebratesafely campaign was started with a licensing workshop at St Helen’s Heritage Centre in Ashby. Presentations covering aspects of licensing; the Ashby Purple Flag Award; the National Pub Watch Scheme and how to recognise new types of synthetic illegal drugs were given. The day was well attended and feedback was very positive.
It is the Christmas light switch on for both Coalville Town and Ashby de la Zouch on Saturday 2 December; police officers will be there on patrol and will be handing out free personal and home security packs.
This years’ campaign will run through the festive season and include.
- Look after yourself and friends

- Look out for your friends, don’t let them walk home alone.
- Out for the night?
- Don’t leave your handbag or phone unattended
- Invest in a light timer when you’re not at home
- Plan ahead
- Plan your journey home, pre book your lift or taxi.
- Be prepared, put taxi numbers in your phone today!
- Book a cab at the start of the night.
Throughout November, officers visited licensed premises in the North West Leicestershire area giving people the opportunity to take a non-evidential breath test which showed them the amount of alcohol they had drunk. This was accompanied with advice about calorie intake, safe limits and the dangers of drink-driving.
Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Our licensing team has visited more than 40 premises in the last few weeks to remind them of the importanceof abiding by their license conditions, especially at Christmas and New Year. Having the support of our pubs, clubs and bars is crucial in preventing anti-social behaviour and public nuisance crimes.”
Inspector Helena Bhakta from North West Leicestershire Police said: “North West Leicestershire is a great place to celebrate Christmas, we like to police with a smile on our faces, so we are asking people to act responsibly as it important to work together to put safety first.”
Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Chair of the Safer North West Partnership, said: “Christmas is a time for family, friends and good times but it’s also the time of the year to be at your most vigilant. Celebrate Safely is aimed at reminding people to drink safely, protect their belongings and always plan ahead making sure they know how they’re getting home. If they remember these three simple things they’re more likely to be able to enjoy the festive season safely and happily.”
Jamie Timms Chairman of Ashby Pubwatch said: “Safety is vital to the success of any town centre’s evening economy and Pubwatch members within North West Leicestershire have been working together with partners to make our community a safer place to celebrate.”
The Celebrate Safely campaign allows licensed premises along with the local police and council to play a prominent and active role in making an improvement to the safety and enjoyment of local residents and visitors to the area.
