LRS announces key board changes

Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport (LRS), the County Sports Partnership (CSP) for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, is delighted to announce some key changes including the appointment of a new Chair and Board Members.

The overarching role of the LRS Board includes:

  • Establishing the strategic direction of LRS
  • Ensuring the work of LRS is planned, developed and implemented in order to pursue the partnership’s Vision, Outcomes, Ambitions and Foundations, as defined in the 2017-2021 Physical Activity & Sport Strategy.
  • Advocating LRS’ long term commitment to widening, increasing, sustaining and extending participation in sport and physical activity.

The three Board Members to take up their new positions from 18th May 2018 are: 

Bev Smith, Chief Executive Officer at North West Leicestershire District Council.

Bev is an enthusiastic, passionate and committed individual who operates at a strategic level as Chief Executive of a large District Council in North West Leicestershire. Establishing effective partnerships that are vital, providing clear visible leadership over a wide range of service areas and specialisms that directly impact the quality of life of its residents. 

Bev said, “I am passionate about the role sport can play in tackling social isolation, improving mental wellbeing and sustaining long and happy lives. I am privileged to be taking on this new exciting role and will continue to be the champion for the partnership, increasing opportunities for participation in active lifestyles in the communities of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.”

Dr Mary Hardwick, Coach & Founding Director, Inspire2tri.

Mary has enjoyed a broad business career at senior management level before "retiring" to follow her passion to establish a small Community Interest Company in rural Rutland to inspire sporting, fitness and activity achievements at all levels. Mary brings experience of working within and between public and private sector organisations, leading significant contractual negotiations and delivering projects to tight deadlines with an inherent quality ethos. A lifelong sportswoman, Mary notably captained England Junior Ladies Cricket Team, played hockey for British Universities and was an Age-Group Sprint Triathlon and Aquathlon Worlds gold medallist in 2011. 

Amna Rafiq, Community Engagement Officer, Leicestershire County Cricket Club in the Community.

Amna in under three years as the Community Engagement Officer, has transformed cricketing opportunities for women and girls in South Asian communities. Amna has drawn upon her range of experiences to set up and deliver exciting new projects in just over 2 years. A level 2 coach and cricket lover, Amna has engaged a number of faith groups and schools, as well as leading to recognition in the way of an Asian cricket award and the young volunteer award at the Yorkshire Cricket OSCA's. 

Amna said, “I'm fully committed to working with a highly experienced Board full of passionate individuals to get people from all communities, age and background more active in order to tackle the physical and mental health agenda whilst also using sport as a vehicle to bring together the diverse communities of Leicestershire & Rutland”.

 On the appointment of the new Board Members, John Byrne, CSP Director said, “Our new Board Members bring an impressive range of expertise and skills. We are delighted to have been able to attract such high quality and I look forward to working closely with them”.

Andy Reed OBE, Chair of LRS from 2004-2018, said; “It’s been an honour to serve for the last 14 years as I always wanted to put something back in to sport – which has given me so many opportunities. I have been surrounded by great people who share my passion over the years on the Board and in the LRS Team. You couldn’t wish to work with a better motivated group of people”.

“I am delighted to hand over the reins to Bev Smith, I have no doubt she will be an inspiring leader and champion of the work that LRS does. I will always lend my support to 

LRS as this is an area of work particularly close to my heart”.

John Byrne, CSP Director said, “We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Board Members who have stood down. They have shared their knowledge and wisdom freely. Collectively they have offered 80 years of support and will be a hard act to follow”.
