Leicestershire Police, with the support from partners, has launched its yearly ‘Safer Summer’ campaign today, Friday 1 June, in the aim to keep people safe during the summer months.
This year, the campaign will focus on four key areas based on crimes that normally peak during the summer months. These topics include online safety, burglary, antisocial and nuisance behaviour and personal safety.
The force will publish a number of social media messages on a different theme each day to help prevent crime and antisocial behaviour during the summer. Some of these messages will include safety at home, what to do if you are going away, alcohol and drugs, how to stay safe online and respecting your neighbours.
The campaign is supported by a range of organisations including Leicester City, Leicestershire County and Rutland County councils, the police and the county’s seven district authorities.
Superintendent Shane O’Neill, Neighbourhood Policing Lead at Leicestershire Police said: “The aim of the Safer Summer campaign is to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. By taking a few simple steps you can to help to protect yourself and your property.
“We ask that people look out for our messages throughout June, July and August, and share them with your friends and relatives. We will also be promoting these through our social media accounts with the #SaferSummer and at local community events.”
Ivan Ould, Cabinet Member for Community Safety at Leicestershire County Council, added: “The summer period should be a time enjoyed by all, so it is important to be tolerant of the occasional BBQ or party.
“It’s important to tolerate and respect your neighbours – so if you’re planning to have friends over in the summer, please be considerate and let your neighbours know too.”
As well as the campaign, Leicestershire Police will be attending a number of local events throughout the summer period and will be encouraging communities to come and speak to local officers and have a photograph, using the hashtag #CopASelfie.
