A variety of skilled trades, housing repairs and support officers jobs will be on offer at a job fair organised by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC).

The specialist fair on Wednesday 20 June is being hosted by the council’s Housing Asset Management team as they look to complete more repair and improvement work in-house rather than using contractors.

Much of the search is for multi-skilled workers with experience working as plumbers, bricklayers, electricians, labourers, carpenters or roofers. Office staff are also required to fill a number of roles in the Housing Asset Management team.Ashley underwood plumber

The event will be held at Stephenson College off Thornborough Road, Coalville, between 5pm and 7pm.

There are a number of benefits of working in a permanent role for the council that might not be available elsewhere:

  • Job security and stability
  • Working only in the local area
  • Inclusion in the Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Opportunities to develop and learn
  • Guaranteed holiday and sick pay depending on length of service

The informal drop-in event is designed to give people who may be interested in applying the chance to talk to current staff from the housing team, be matched to roles that might be suitable and directed on how to apply.

Lara Sofoluwe, a Senior Quantity Surveyor at NWLDC, said: “As a working mum, the council has provided me with opportunities for success, flexibility and a good work-life balance within what is often seen as a male-dominated role.”

Michael Fowell, a current Trainee Quantity Surveyor at NWLDC, said: “After joining the council as an apprentice electrician I was encouraged to develop, learn and progress. Now I’m a permanent employee, supported in my studies one day a week at university and on track to become a qualified quantity surveyor.”

Ashley Underwood, who works as a plumber for the council, said: “Being a permanent employee means I know what my hours are and that I’ll always be working locally within North West Leicestershire. I also have the security of knowing there is guaranteed holiday and sick pay, all of which makes finding the balance with my family life so much easier.”

Councillor Roger Bayliss, Portfolio Holder for Housing at NWLDC, said: “This is a great opportunity for local people to find a new job that offers the security and stability that can be unusual in these lines of work. If you know friends or family that might be interested please let them so know and we’ll be delighted to welcome them at the fair.”
