Thousands of people have enjoyed a weekend of free family fun at the Music and Picnic in the Park events in Coalville.
North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) organised the back to back festivities in Coalville Park, which saw a line-up of talented musicians and bands perform.
Around 5,000 people attended the events over the weekend with Music in the Park kicking things off on Saturday evening with performances 50s and 60s singer Andy B Goode, the Ashby Big Band and jazz band Strife of Riley.
Sunday’s Picnic in the Park featured an array of stalls, attractions and family entertainment including Baby Big Top Circus, entertainer The Man in the Moon, children’s rides and inflatables. There was more music too on the big stage from Bel Canto Youth Choir, Desford Colliery Band, Justice Beach, 80s Sensation and Idle Empire.
Coalville Miners’ Gala tents also showcase the area’s heritage through the work of local historical and heritage groups.
An additional highlight were the 27 decorated wooden boards on display that had been designed by children from 13 schools from across Coalville. All of the schools produced boards based on the theme of ‘Choose Coalville’, leading to variety of creations celebrating the town.
Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “What a fantastic weekend in Coalville Park! It was great to see the sun shining and so many people come out and enjoy these wonderful free events.
“There was a fantastic atmosphere and some fabulous performances on stage and it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves. We’re very proud to be able to put these free events for families in the district. Thank you for the support of everyone that came along.”
David Bradford from Ashby Big Band said: “We play all over the country and really appreciate the planning that goes in to a weekend like this. The volunteers were really helpful and professional. It is great as a local musician and band leader to have support from the local council, and as a local resident it is really appreciated that an event like this is put on. We had a lovely time enjoying a picnic in the park with our grandchildren.”
Pete Smith, Chairman of the Coalville Miners’ Gala committee said: “This was Coalville Miners’ Gala second year attending Picnic in the Park and we’d like to thank NWLDC for involving us. We were over the moon with the quality of the displays put on by all the societies involved, and the warm reception from visitors to the event.”
Both events will return next year on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June.
