Plans for new Ashby B&M store approved

Retailer B&M could open a new store in Ashby-de-la-Zouch after planning permission was granted by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC).

The plan to build the shop, garden centre and car park at the Ashby Gateway – near to the M&S Food Hall - was heard at the Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday 2 October. The applicant indicated that the store will be operated by B&M.

Negotiations by planning officers have ensured that the design complements that of the nearby food hall which opened in 2017 and recently won the People’s Choice award at NWLDC’s Good Design celebration.

An Ashby business owner spoke at the committee against the application citing concerns about a loss of footfall to the town centre. An independent report commissioned by NWLDC did not support this claim, and the committee chose to approve the application.

Speaking about the decision, Chair of Planning Committee, Councillor Nigel Smith, said: “This application met all the planning requirements and we’re confident it will be a good addition for the town. An independent report made clear this development would not be detrimental to Ashby town centre.

“We were also pleased that our planning officers had been able to negotiate with the developer on the design so that it is in keeping with the nearby M&S Food Hall, which recently won an award after being voted the best designed building in the district of the last 10 years.”

Later in the meeting, an application for nine for new homes on land off Forest Road in Hugglescote was also approved by the committee. This was permitted with a condition that work can only take place at the site on weekdays between 7am and 6pm.
