Harness community spirit and take part in annual spring clean

Published: Thu 28 March, 2019

People living across North West Leicestershire will head out into their communities next weekend for a little bit of spring cleaning.

A number of towns and villages across the district have organised litter picks as part of the national Great British Spring Clean weekend.

One of these is the fourth annual Coalville Spring Clean, which takes place on Saturday 6 April from 10am in Memorial Square.

Led by North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), the clean-up will target parts of the town that attract the most litter including Ashby Road, Baker Street, Thornborough Road and Bridge Road.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to take part (children must be accompanied by an adult) and all equipment, including litter pickers, bags and hi-vis vests, will be provided.

Last year cadets from the 1188 Coalville Squadron Air Training Corps joined other volunteers to help remove more than 60 bin bags of litter from the town during the spring clean.

Ashby’s litter pick, organised by Ashby Rotary Club and supported by NWLDC and Ashby Town Council, attracted more than 100 volunteers last year.

Upcoming community litter picks across the district include:

  • Ashby Big Tidy Up, Saturday 6 April, 1pm from various locations. For more information visit
  • Coleorton, Saturday 30 March, 9.45am from Beaumont Green
  • Normanton le Heath, Saturday 30 March, 9.45am from ‘the Green’ in Main Street
  • Appleby Magna, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 March, 10pm to 2pm from the playground by Bowleys Lane playing field

Clare Proudfoot, Environmental Team Manager at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “Every extra pair of hands can make a real difference during these community litter picks and taking part is something to be proud of.

“Our Street Cleansing teams work hard all year round to keep our district clean and tidy, but they can’t be everywhere at once. The boost in tidying that comes through the spring clean can make a massive difference.

“Even if you only have an hour to spare get involved, embrace the community spirit and enjoy taking pride in your area!”

Community litter picking is not something that is only done during the Great British Spring Clean, and NWLDC encourages volunteers to take part all year round.

The district already has a healthy team of community litter pickers, and if you would like to get involved, visit or contact Ruth or Jackie on 01530 454863.

Hazel McDowell, a regular community litter picker in the Coalville area, said: “Becoming a litter picker is a brilliant way to have a positive impact on your local environment.

“Just 30 minutes of litter picking has lots of benefits: fresh air and exercise improve your health and wellbeing, it instantly transforms the place where you live and you are doing your bit to save the planet. Go on - give it a try!”
