Published: Wed 22 May, 2019

North West Leicestershire District Council in partnership with Building Business is launching a Women into Self Employment (WISE) course to help women in the area to set up their own businesses.

The Programme offers a mix of 121 business support, 1-day confidence building workshop, a six week programme of start up workshops that cover key aspects of running a business and how to get started when it comes to being your own boss and the opportunity to apply for up to £500 worth of start up funding.

The course programme is as follows:

  • Session 1 – Introduction and business basics
  • Session 2 – Defining your product and identifying your customers
  • Session 3 – Business requirements and marketing
  • Session 4 – Looking after the money
  • Session 5 – Business Planning
  • Session 6 – Next steps and access to finance

The workshops are open to any females located in North West Leicestershire looking to set up their own business. By the end of the course, each attendee will have created their own business plan and be ready to launch their idea!

Since establishing Building Business in 2006, owner Ruth Roan has helped hundreds of women get into self-employment.

She said: “WISE is a project that I feel hugely passionate about. The programme has been designed to cover everything you need to know about self-employment and starting your own business and is suitable for any ladies looking at or thinking about working for themselves and becoming self-employed. Whilst the workshops are hugely practical, there is also an element of emotional support too which is essential when taking a leap and making a change”

WISE is all about inspiring women to believe they can succeed and turn their dreams into reality. We give them the tools, advice and support they need to create their own successful enterprises and the lives they desire.

Barrie Walford, Business Focus Team Manager at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We want to actively promote entrepreneurship within the district and assist more women to start their own business.

“Women account for only one in four of the self-employed people in North West Leicestershire and we believe working in partnership with WISE to deliver this new programme can help to change this trend.

“North West Leicestershire is a great place to start and run a successful business and is home to 52 of Leicester & Leicestershire’s Top 200 Businesses. We’d love to see this continue and for more female-led businesses to emerge.”
