Community groups can bring colour and life to North West Leicestershire by applying for funding to fill the district with flowers.

North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Green Shoots scheme has now re-opened for groups to apply for funding to be spent on the bulbs of a variety of flowers.

The scheme, which has provided 179,500 bulbs to community groups since it began in 2015, encourages groups from across North West Leicestershire to plant a variety of flowers.

A range of bulbs are available including narcissi, daffodils, crocus and tulips. Groups match fund the amount granted to them by the council and then rally their volunteers to plant the bulbs in time for next spring.

Fifteen community groups received Green Shoots grants last year, including:

  • Friends of Thringstone
  • Breedon on the Hill Parish Council
  • Measham Medical Unit Patient Participation Group

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “This scheme just keeps growing in popularity year on year and as a result we see flowers in bloom across the district every spring.

“We have many community groups that come to us every year for a grant, but we’d love to support some new groups to apply too this year. The more flowers that are planted the better!

“Everyone wants to live in welcoming and pleasant surroundings, and to see North West Leicestershire looking bright and beautiful. This scheme and the community groups that get behind it help to make this happen.”

Community groups, organisations, and parish councils need to order a minimum of 2,000 bulbs, which can be a combination of different types of flower.  This number of bulbs would cost approximately £100, with a further £100 of match funding provided by NWLDC.

Applications must be made by Friday 9 August and forms can be found at

The council is also offering Green Grants of £500 for environmentally-focused community projects across the district. These are simple projects that make a big impact and are open to groups and organisations, including parish councils.  Match funding of £500 is required. Application forms can be completed online at
