Adults looking to improve their health and fitness have the opportunity to join a football-based Couch to Goal programme in either North West Leicestershire or Charnwood.
The aim is to introduce people that are struggling with their weight to take up football in a relaxed environment with fellow players of a similar fitness level.
It is the perfect opportunity for anyone over the age of 18 that is looking to get more active and boost their fitness.
Organised by North West Leicestershire District Council and Charnwood Borough Council, two 10-week courses will run in parallel.
When the programme is complete the two teams will meet each other in a friendly game, testing their new-found fitness and skills on the pitch!
The initial sessions take place weekly at:
- Hood Park Leisure Centre, Ashby, on Tuesdays from 23 July between 6.30pm and 8pm
- Soar Valley Leisure Centre, Mountsorrel, on Thursdays from 25 July between 6.30 and 8pm.
Zara Barnes, the course leader from the NWLDC Health and Wellbeing team, said: “We know there are lots of people in our district that would love to get fitter, healthier and lose some weight, but perhaps lack a little bit of the confidence required to get started.
“Couch to Goal is great opportunity to get active playing football in a friendly environment with people in similar shape also looking to get fitter.
“Sessions are relaxed and fun but we’ve kept a competitive element for the end with a match against members from the Charnwood Couch to Goal course, which will be great fun.”
Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “Improving the health and wellbeing of people in our district is a big challenge for us and we have a huge part to play in providing leisure opportunities for everyone.
“We are excited to be building a new £23 million leisure centre in Coalville, but we are also committed to providing accessible courses like Couch to Goal. It’s about giving people the opportunity to be active if an environment where they can feel comfortable, relaxed and not under any pressure.”
Cllr Deborah Taylor, lead member for communities for Charnwood Borough Council said: “We are committed to providing a wide range of events and activities to help residents in Charnwood become more active.
“The new Couch to Goal sessions offer people a great opportunity to get fitter while having fun, learning new skills and meeting new people.
“I’d encourage anyone who may be interested to book onto the sessions and give it a go.”
