Coalville Newmarket plans receive approval

A former pub in Coalville will be transformed into a new, modern indoor market after planning permission was granted.

The former Litten Tree pub in Marlborough Square will be become a market hall, with traditional market stalls and food vendors, as well as flexible space for entertainment and events.

Planning permission for the building use to be changed was granted by North West Leicestershire District Council’s (NWLDC) Planning Committee on Tuesday 3 December.

The district council has contractors lined up to start the work to transform the building early in the New Year. The new market will open in the spring.

The front entrance of the market, which will be named Newmarket to reflect the historic name of the square, will be reconfigured to return some of the heritage features of the building. With extra glazing and a reinstated half-moon window above the door, the new front will be a welcome change from the currently empty and derelict pub building.

Four food vendors and a shared seating area will be located at the front of the market hall, and traditional market stalls selling a range of wares will complete the venue. Stallholders from the current indoor market have been offered space within the Newmarket or on the outdoor market in the redesigned Marlborough Square once this is complete. Others are being supported to move into alternative premises in the town centre.

The plans are the latest step in NWLDC’s work to regenerate Coalville town centre, with other schemes including a redesign of Marlborough Square, a frontage grant scheme for businesses and a wide-ranging events programme.

Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services at NWLDC, said: “This is great news for Coalville and we’re very excited for work to get under way on site in January.

“Newmarket is an important part of our regeneration plans for the Coalville and helps us to move away from the failing market building we currently have in the wrong part of the town.

“We continue to work with the market traders who are coming with on this journey and offer our support to those moving their businesses into other town centre premises. I’d urge shoppers to continue to support all our traders in the current market hall while building work progresses at Newmarket.”
