A pub that was the heart of the Castle Donington community during the height of the pandemic has become the first business in the district to achieve COVID-safe status.

The Lamb Inn, Station Road is the first business in North West Leicestershire to join the council’s Let’s be COVID-safe together scheme to support local businesses and give shoppers and customers confidence to return to the high street.

Sarah Bennett, Landlady of The Lamb Inn, said: “Staff are over the moon with the recognition, our hard work has paid off.

“Our customers really respect what we’re doing. It’s become second nature now and we want people to know that we’re doing all we can to keep them safe.”

Since reopening the doors to customers in April, Sarah and her team have worked to ensure customers feel safe and welcome.

Hand sanitiser is available, windows and doors are open for ventilation and staff work to an hourly cleaning schedule. Tables and touch points are also cleaned as soon as people use them.

While table service is no longer the only way to order a pint, customers nervous about approaching the bar can continue to text their order.

Sarah added: “We’re a family here and we have worked hard to be at the heart of the village, even through lockdown. If our customers don’t feel comfortable, we would like them to tell us.”

Let’s be COVID-safe together is afree-to-join scheme by North West Leicestershire District Council aims to reassure customers that the business is doing more than the Government requires to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.

Applicants to the scheme must prove they have completed risk assessments for COVID-safe measures, have good ventilation and have regular cleaning in place. Businesses must continue to review their procedures and communicate the measures to staff.

Councillor Andrew Woodman, Portfolio Holder for Community Services at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: “We’ve seen a great reaction to the scheme from businesses and I am pleased we’re able to provide reassurance to the public that customer-facing businesses are working to keep staff and visitors safe.

“I’m delighted to welcome the Lamb Inn as the first of many businesses on the Covid-safe scheme. There is a lot of hard work going on to boost local consumer confidence so it’s great to be able to recognise and support it.

“We also hope other businesses can learn from the measures introduced by The Lamb to make being COVID-safe an everyday part of the working day.”
