King’s coronation celebrations continue legacy

Published: Wed 3 May, 2023

Former coronations have paved the way for a family legacy as residents in Osgathorpe get ready to celebrate King Charles III coronation.

Friends, neighbours, and families in the village are preparing to celebrate in the same field that they celebrated the late Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953.

Mick Allard, who is hosting a private street party for fellow villagers, is only four hours younger than King Charles III and was five years old when he celebrated the Queen’s coronation. On behalf of her uncle Mick, Kathryn Adkins, said:

“We’re celebrating in the same field in Osgathorpe where we celebrated Queen Elizabeth's coronation and have memorabilia going back to former King’s coronations which have been passed down through the generations.

“We’ll have them all on display along with photos of my uncle meeting King Charles as the Prince of Wales.”

Kathryn was one of the applicants to receive a celebration pack containing environmentally-friendly bunting, cups and cutlery from North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) to help non-constituted groups put on community events.

Parish and town councils, school and community groups also received support and were able to apply for up to £250 using the council’s King Coronation Grant Scheme.

In total, the council has handed out nearly £10,000 in grants and 20 celebration packs which have helped over 60 groups prepare for street parties, picnics and events.

Among those to receive funding is Ashby Town Council’s Party in the Park, the Marlene Reid Centre’s Coronation Tea Party, and Coleorton Heritage Group’s Picnic in the Wood.

As well as local events taking place across the district, the council’s Big Coronation Lunch will take place at Coalville Park on Sunday 7 May from 12pm until 4pm.

Paul Sanders, Head of Community Services, said: “By helping groups celebrate such a historic occasion, we hope that it will strengthen the bonds of our communities and give people a chance to thrive together.

“I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local events across the district.”
