Isn't a standing order the same as a direct debit?

No. Standing Orders require you to change the amount with your bank each time your payments change. With Direct Debit the amount changes automatically, even from year to year and you are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee which means that we are not able to change the amount, date of collection or frequency without giving at least 10 working days notice in writing.

Doesn't a direct debit allow the council unlimited access to my bank account?

No. You are fully protected by the guarantee which states that the Council must advise you in advance of changes to the amounts and the due dates.

How do I apply to pay by direct debit?

It's simple! Have your bank account details and your Rent Account reference number and call 01530 454799 or Council Tax reference number (shown on your notice) to hand and complete the online form. Alternatively call us on 01530 454499 to set it up over the telephone.
