The Government requires local planning authorities to assess the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers and Travelling Showpeople and to meet those needs through the identification of land for suitable sites. Our current level of need has been identified in the 2017 Gypsy, Traveller and Travelling Showpeople Accommodation Assessment (PDF Document, 2.48 Mb), which we have undertaken jointly with Leicester City Council and the other Leicestershire authorities (except Hinckley and Bosworth).

It is the Council’s intention to plan to meet the identified need through the production of a specific Gypsy and Traveller Site Allocation Development Plan Document (DPD). The DPD will identify sites for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople in a sustainable way which balances meeting the accommodation needs of these groups and the protection of the natural and built environment.

Progress so far

You can view details of previous stages in the production of the DPD.

Current work

We are currently reviewing representations submitted during the 'call for sites' exercise undertaken and continuing our own search for potential additional site options.
