The Covenant

The North West Leicestershire Armed Forces Signed Covenant (PDF Document, 0.19 Mb) was signed on Friday 2 May 2014, declaring how the district will support members of the armed forces.

Armed Forces Community CovenantThe Leader and Chief Executive of North West Leicestershire District Council were joined by Andrew Bridgen MP, Lieutenant Colonel Keith Spiers, and David Atterbury, County Chairman of Leicestershire and Rutland Royal British Legion in signing the covenant.

The Armed Forces Community Covenant is a public declaration that we will work to support serving and former members of the armed forces community.

Commitment

As part of this commitment, we have pledged to:

  • Nominate an Armed Forces Champion - Councillor Tony Gillard who will make sure military involvement is embedded at the highest levels within the council 
  • Nominate an Armed Forces Support Officer - Wendy May, Cultural Services Team Manager who supports the Armed Forces Champion and manages Armed Forces Community Covenant projects, events and initiatives
  • Use our website to provide information on the Armed Forces community and the covenant itself
  • Fly a Flag for Armed Forces Day to raise awareness of the role our Armed Forces and their families continue to play
  • Mark Remembrance Day by supporting a public act of remembrance and the parade through the town and at the War Memorial
  • Recognise Armistice Day, on 11.11. at 11am with a two minute silence at the Council Offices, and support the two minutes silence at the War Memorial in Coalville
  • Provide housing support to members of the armed forces to make sure they are not disadvantaged by the requirement to have a local connection to qualify for inclusion on our Housing Register and therefore access to social housing
  • Provide access to council leisure services and offer serving members and veterans a 25% membership discount at leisure centres
  • Provide information on health services to support any injured military personnel who settle in North West Leicestershire
  • Continue to recognise the importance of local war memorials
  • Promote the Community Fund and support applications to it.  The Covenant Fund is now open and receiving applications.  Funding priorities are set annually by the Covenant Reference Group.

Veteran's Gateway 

Veteran's Gateway is a support service that puts veterans and their families in touch with the organisations best placed to help with the information, advice and support they need – from healthcare and housing to employability, finances, personal relationships and more.
