Services for Older People

The council offers a number of services to provide help and assistance to the elderly and these are listed below.

Supported or Sheltered Housing

Supported Housing provides secure,comfortable, pleasant accommodation and has been designed in two different styles. Some have properties situated in one building connected by communal corridors. For more information visit our Supported & Sheltered Housing area.

First Contact

Enables agencies to work together to refer people to appropriate agencies in a co-ordinated way. The scheme applies to vulnerable adults aged 18+ including older people who are resident within Leicestershire.

When a staff member from any of the agencies involved in the scheme, such as a volunteer, police officer / police community support officer, environmental health officer, council worker or firefighter is in contact with a vulnerable adult by; a visit to their home, a telephone call or during their work with them, they can offer to complete one simple checklist to find out if that person has any other particular needs, for example smoke alarms/home fire safety checks or emergency life line.  Referrals can be made for a wide varierty of assistance to different organisations.

How to Apply for a  Lifeline Alarm

Bus Passes for the Elderly

People born on or before 5th April 1950 qualify for a pass on their 60th birthday. From 6th April 2010, the government has changed the regulations about qualifying age, in line with rules about state pensions for women. Men and women born on or after 6th April 1950 will have to wait an extra period of time to receive their pass. Leicetershire County Council opates a concessionary travel scheme in partnership with local district councils in Leicestershire.
