Welcome to the Planning pages of the North West Leicestershire Council website.

Planning is made up of  Development Control and Planning Policy and is also supported by Planning Enforcement colleagues in the Councils Street Action Team. 

Development Control is the department that provides pre-application planning advice, from the consideration of whether planning permission is required, to providing informal advice on development proposals.  Development Control are also the department responsible for determining planning applications, which includes engaging with the local communities who may be affected as part of a statutory consultation period.  Subsequent to any decision Development Control process any appeals, and deal with the discharge of any planning conditions.

Planning Policy set in place the framework against which development proposals are assessed. Planning policy at a local level has to be in conformity with national planning policy, and given that this is in a process of change the team are busy preparing a Local Development Framework to replace the saved policies of the Local Plan including the new Core Strategy.

By utilising the links on the left of this page you can find out a lot more about planning in North West Leicestershire.  You can comment on an existing planning application.  You can find out the necessary information that you will need to submit a planning application and also obtain the necessary forms to enquire whether planning permission is required for a development you may be proposing.

Our Customer Focussed Approach to Planning

As a department we appreciate that Planning is an emotive topic, and the decisions taken can result in one parties happy outcome being to the expense of another’s wishes.  To remain impartial in this process Planning Officers work to the guidelines set down by the Royal Town Planning Institute’s Code of Conduct in terms of providing professional planning judgements and recommendations that are based upon a robust assessment of current planning law, legislation and policy.  There are clearly times when this may conflict with the view of local residents, and planning matters can often become highly charged in this respect. 

The Planning Officers role is to weigh up all the considerations, those relevant, and those that are not, and enable the Council to make sound planning decisions.  Above all, the planning department seeks to offer a customer focussed approach to our service users, and we monitor our performance regularly.

Based on our Annual Survey the current Customer Satisfaction Level with the Planning Service is  92.4%

We assess our performance against the following criteria:

1.       Ease of contact with Planning Services

2.       Time taken to respond to query/application

3.       Ease of understanding the information/advice given

4.       How competent the staff were

5.       Helpfulness and courtesy of staff you dealt with.

6.       Overall, how satisfied are you with the service provided
