We have prepared a draft supplementary planning document (SPD) to guide the design of shop fronts and advertisements. The SPD would replace our existing 'Advice on traditional shop fronts and signage', which we prepared in 2007.
The retail centres at Ashby, Castle Donington, Coalville, Ibstock, Kegworth and Measham are designated as conservation areas. A retail centre of well designed and well maintained shop fronts would project an impression of quality that would attract residents and visitors alike. Conversely a poorly designed and poorly maintained shop front would suggest that the goods and services offered inside may be much the same.
The SPD explains the historic development of shop fronts and illustrates the elements of their design. It explains some basic principles that should inform the design of a new shop front, whether it is 'traditional' or 'contemporary' in its design approach.
Please use the links below to download the proposed document (2018) and the existing guidance (2007).
We would welcome your comments on the draft SPD before Friday 6 June 2018. Please use the link below to complete our online consultation form or post your comments to:

Coalville local development order
We have also prepared a draft local development order (LDO) for Coalville town centre. The LDO would support the continuation of our frontage improvement scheme. It would allow certain works to shop fronts to be carried out without the need for Planning Permission.
Please use the link below to find out more about the LDO and to comment on the draft document.
