We have prepared appraisals for each of our 26 conservation areas. Some of the appraisals were prepared some years ago but their content still remains largely valid. A programme of updating and revision is under way and the website will always have the most up-to-date version available.

A character appraisal evaluates and records the special interest of the conservation area. It provides a basis for making informed and sustainable decisions about the future of the area. It may inform decisions on applications for development that would affect the conservation area.

A character appraisal identifies those elements that make a positive contribution to the character of the area (which may be vulnerable to harm) and those elements that make a negative contribution (which may offer opportunities for enhancement). This may inform the development of a management plan for the area.

The decision to produce a management plan would depend upon the nature and extent of the vulnerabilities and opportunities identified and whether it is necessary to address these through a specific (rather than generic) work programme.
